Voter Turnout Was Lower among Rural Youth in Recent Elections

Rural youth voter turnout lags behind that of their urban counterparts, in both 2020 and 2022. In 2020, the percent difference was 15%, while it was 13% in 2022, showing relatively even gaps in both presidential and midterm elections.

For youth voter turnout data, rurality is defined based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service’s 2013 Rural-Urban Continuum Codes codes, including 5, 7, 8, and 9.
