Trends In the Number of U.S. Communities with Red Light Safety Camera Programs (2012 - 2026)

While new safety camera programs are still being introduced, the overall number has dropped since 2012, as more have been discontinued than launched. The chart shows this decline, starting from 533 programs in 2012 to just 352 as of January 2026.

Programs have the best chance of earning community support if they are designed to improve safety by modifying driver behavior and not to generate revenue.
