July 11: Which states have Covid-19 under control?

For the week of July 3-10, the states furthest to the right on this chart had the highest # of new cases per 100K residents, with Arizona, Florida, and Louisiana leading the pack. The states at the top of the chart had the fastest increases in new cases, with West Virginia, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico seeing the largest percentage increases (albeit on small bases).  Thus, the states closest to the upper-right corner are in the most dangerous position -- they have a high number of new cases per week plus fast growth in those case numbers. (If current trends continue, Florida will have the most new cases per 100K pop. next week.)

HOW TO READ: Mouse over state bubbles to see state name and key statistics. States furthest to the right had the highest rates of new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population last week. States at the top of the chart had the fastest week-over-week growth rate in new cases. Size of bubble indicates population of state. Color of bubble indicates 2016 presidential election result in state. ("Trump flip" means state voted for Obama in 2012 and Trump in 2016.)  DANGER ZONE: When hospital systems were starting to fail (i.e., ICU beds full and corpses piling up) in certain parts of certain states in March and April, those states were seeing about 150 new cases per 100K pop. per week. (That said, less testing of the general population was being done at the time, so the corresponding danger # of new cases per week may be higher today.)
