SFPD's new Flock policies are still behind other cities

Automated license plate reader policies of police officers in Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco

If license plate data is deemed important for an ongoing investigation, all departments noted above have policies allowing them to hold it beyond their normal retention period. In practice, one SFPD officer has audited the department's Flock logs every month since the first data breach was uncovered in 2025. That was not required by policy however.
