23 states and the Northern Mariana islands have a recreational cannabis marketplace, which generated over $2 billion from excise tax alone in 2023. Medical cannabis sales are allowed in 17 states, and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some states have legalized possession, but do not have a marketplace.
