Recent Progress Narrowed the Gap Between SSI/SSP Grants and the Poverty Line

Maximum Monthly SSI/SSP Grant Levels for an Individual

The chart shows three trend lines between 2007 and 2024. It displays the federal poverty line (FPL) relative to the SSI/SSP grant, which shows growth in 2021, but remains below the FPL. The third line shows the amount grants would have grown to had the SSP been adjusted for cost of living. In 2024, the COLA grant would have been about $1,356 rather than the $1,183 it is today. The FPL for an individual in one month in 2024 is about $1,255.

Note: The COLA SSI/SSP grant projects what the grant would look like across time if the maximum SSP grant in January 2007 had been adjusted for cost of living using the California Necessities Index starting in January 2008.
