The 2024 figure is based on comments by Budget Minister Laurent Saint-Martin to lawmakers in September 2024. The methodology to calculate the deficit/GDP ratio was updated in 2024; as a result, the new figures no longer match reports published in previous years (e.g. in 2017, the deficit was 2.6 percent of GDP, which put France out of the excessive deficit procedure.)
