Juvenile judges prefer private attorneys to public defenders

As the only judge more likely to appoint public defenders to represent kids accused of crimes, Judge Alison Floyd is an outlier among the six judges of the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court. The disparity in assigning public defenders underscores the influence of judicial discretion on the court’s system for providing attorneys for kids and families when they can’t afford them.

Note: Judges Jennifer O'Malley and Thomas O'Malley are not related.
