Maternal mortality has improved but behind target

The maternal mortality rate is at 197 deaths per 100,000 live births, 40% improvement since the year 2000 - but well behind the global target to reach just 71 deaths by 2030.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, maternal deaths continue to soar and are not reducing quickly enough. Though deaths in Northern America are low, it is the only region to see a worse maternal mortality rate over this century.
