Harvard Business School has been described as the “West Point of Capitalism” – the place to learn how to lead teams and run an operation top-to-bottom. Just one problem: no one seems to have told employers about this. This year, Harvard Business School finished 7th in starting average pay in General Management at $151,409 ($181 less than the previous year). This is well behind Stanford GSB, which set the pace for General Management in 2023 at a $179,622 starting base. This pay is also far above the Wharton School ($163,858) and Northwestern Kellogg ($157,790), which ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively (though Kellogg’s pay represents a $18,619 bump over the previous year). Like Marketing, Washington Foster and Rice Jones ranked much higher in pay than their overall ranking might lead you to believe. At the same time, the University of Wisconsin’s $141,200 average bested two Top 10 programs: Yale SOM and NYU Stern. True to form, a Stanford GSB grad snagged the highest individual base in General Management at $375,000 as grads from 10 business schools cracked the $200,000 or more ceiling.
