Economists measure the gap between the rich and the poor with what’s known as the Gini index or coefficient. It's calculated by assessing the relative share of national income received by proportions of the population. With absolute equality, the Gini coefficient would be 0. If one person hogged all income, it would be 1. This index is higher in the U.S. than in other countries with high incomes.
