Average turnover rates among nursing staff in U.S. nursing homes

The map below displays a state-by-state breakdown of overall average nursing staff turnover rates. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid defines the turnover rates as the percentage of nursing staff who left a nursing home within a 12-month period. On the map, the darker the shade of green, the higher the turnover rate. Hover over each state to see its individual rating. Percentages are current as of Nov. 1, 2022.

About this data: The nurse staffing information from CMS includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, vocational nurses and nurse aides who work under the direction of licensed nurse staff and provide much of the day-to-day care for nursing home residents, such as eating, bathing, grooming and toileting.
