Overall, the rate of pedestrian fatalities per pedestrian commuters in the United States increased dramatically between 2014 and 2023. Only four states saw a decrease in this pedestrian fatality rate over this time period - Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, and Rhode Island. This type of metric is a proxy for volume-based risk metrics commonly used by traffic safety agencies and is used because no volume estimates exist for walking in the United States. Average displayed is average pedestrian deaths per 10,000 pedestrian commuters.

Commuter data is based upon 5-year estimates from the B08006 table of the America Community Survey for the last year of each 5-year period. Pedestrian fatalities per commuter represents pedestrian deaths per ten thousand pedestrian commuters.
