annual averages of pm 2.5 pollution

National Air Quality Standards are based on 24-hr averages and annual averages. Those values don't reflect temporary high spikes in air pollution seen throughout California. A group of scientists recently proposed to lower the national standards to better protect public health. The current annual PM 2.5 standard is an average of 12 micrograms per cubic meter.
