Smoking rates have decreased significantly

The proportion of Australians who say they are regularly smoking has decreased, but not as much as the shortfall in tax revenue would suggest. In 2019, about 14% were current smokers — today that's just over 10%.

An area chart shows the proportion of green "never smoke" growing over time, from about half in 1990 to more than 65% in 2023. Portions for "smoked previously" stays relatively steady, while "daily", "weekly", and "less than weekly" decreases dramatically.
