Some Vermont towns turn to local option taxes

This year, more than a dozen towns and cities have added 1% to the base statewide tax rates to help pay for local needs. Hinesburg and Bennington voters rejected such taxes in the November election.

Essex voters endorsed a 1% rooms local option tax on Nov. 3, 2026, but because of an error in how the town warned the votes, the measure will need to go before voters again on Town Meeting Day 2027.
