PFAS cleanup lags at Great Lakes military bases

The Duluth Air National Guard base is one of several Great Lakes military installations contaminated with toxic Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chemicals once used in firefighting foam. Though no public drinking water sources have been compromised in Duluth, Lake Superior smelt are under a consumption advisory due to the chemicals and two private wells around the Duluth airport have high enough levels to warrant filtration.
