Pennsylvania approves few petitions for medical transfers from prisons

Since 2016, roughly half of people in Pennsylvania state prisons who have petitioned for medical transfers have been moved from a prison to a hospital, long-term care facility, or hospice. In cases labeled "other," the petition is pending, was withdrawn, or was vacated because the person was granted a new trial.

Between 2009 and 2015, judges granted medical transfers to nine people. The Department of Corrections does not have detailed data on other petitions filed during those years.
