Pennsylvania’s Long-Shrinking Federal Workforce
Federal employment in Pennsylvania had been declining steadily since at least 1990, bottoming out in 2014. Meanwhile, total employment in the state across industries grew to a high of 6.14 million last year.
Two line charts contrast the change in the number of employees at federal agencies and at all employers in Pennsylvania between 1990 and 2025. The figures show that, as of 2024, the federal government employed 103,700 workers in the state. That's down from a high of 78,100 in 1990, the earliest date for which data are available. Meanwhile, total employment in the state across industries has grown from 5.17 million in 1990 to 6.14 million in 2024.
