Data collected by state health officials suggests that restraints were being used less often at New Hampshire's certified residential treatment facilities in 2021 than in previous years.

NHPR calculated these totals by adding up the restraints recorded on a monthly basis at certified residential treatment facilities, as reported in annual reports that the Department of Health and Human Services files with the Legislature. The state changed its annual reporting timeline between 2019 and 2020, resulting in some overlap between those annual reports. Slightly different numbers were reported for the months of July through October 2019 in the state's 2019 annual report than in its 2020 annual report. We chose to use the numbers in the 2020 report, to reflect the most recent data.
