More Americans lack religious affiliation

The number of Americans who identify as Christian has declined about 30 percentage points since 1972, according to answers to a survey question from General Social Survey asking participants which religion they identify with.

The Christian category includes Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox Christian, Christian and inter-nondenominational, along with subsets of the religions. Other includes people who answered the survey do not know/cannot choose, Jewish, other, Buddhism, Hinduism, other Eastern religions, Muslim/Islam or Native American. Unaffiliated includes those who answered none.
