"Friend of the court" briefs filed in Fifth Circuit Appeals Court mifepristone lawsuit
Various entities can request permission from the court to file "amicus curiae" briefs supporting or opposing the plaintiffs' case. The briefs often include arguments that may be especially applicable to that organization's specific interests. As of May 18, 23 entities have filed amicus briefs in favor of withdrawing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone, one of two drugs used to terminate a pregnancy, and 59 entities have filed briefs opposing the withdrawal.
