The share of women in Congress is very slowly increasing

Share of congressional seats held by Democratic and Republican women by session of Congress, since the 100th session, which began in 1987

For sessions of Congress prior to the current one, the data reflects the share of women serving at the end of that session of Congress and therefore may include women who were sworn in after the election for the next session.

The next session of Congress includes only races that have been reported by ABC News to have a projected winner as of Nov. 15, 2022, at 5 p.m. Eastern, plus the Senate race in Alaska, where the only two viable candidates are Republican women.
