Percent of ICU beds for COVID-19 patients in states that are at or near capacity

In 15 of the 17 states where ICUs are at least 85% full, COVID-19 patients occupy more than a third of the beds.

COVID-19 patients include confirmed and suspected cases. Capacity is based on the number of staffed ICU beds and is the daily average for the first week of September (except Hawaii, which has six days due to outlier data).

Some hospitals report total occupancy but not COVID-19 occupancy. In states with this discrepancy, these hospitals account for only 1% to 5% of ICU beds being reported.
