Outcomes of Death Row Cases From Shelby County during 1976-2026

Since the 1970s — when the U.S. Supreme Court decided capital punishment was constitutional — 231 people have been sent to death row in Tennessee. The most death row prisoners come from Shelby County, however more than half of those death sentences have been overturned.
