$2.1 billion is heading to 35 public campus projects to create affordable student housing

Housing plans are projected to develop space for 11,400 new affordable beds for students at the California Community Colleges, California State University and University of California.

The projects are through California's Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program.

Some campus projects will use outside funds to add dorm space at rents that aren't as low as the state-funded beds but that campuses say will still be below market rates. The table above shows only the state-grant portion of each project and the number of affordable beds the state grant money will produce. For example, the full San Jose State project costs $333.8 million to build 1,007 beds, of which 517 are affordable at a cost of $89.1 million in state support.
