A cell's volume scales faster than its surface area

The internal volume of a spherical cell is proportional to the cube of its radius, whereas its surface area is proportional to the square of its radius.

Note: This relationship only holds for roughly spherical cells. Elongated or donut-shaped cells have a higher surface area-to-volume ratio.
