A pandemic-era dip in hate crimes at school

Hate crime offenses fell across the board in 2020, but hit a five-year peak in 2022 – including offenses motivated by bias against Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

Four line plots show the number of hate crime offenses at schools, colleges and universities between 2018 and 2022. Each plot highlights a different bias motivation behind the offense. On the far left-hand side, the plot shows that there were 547 anti-Black or African American offenses in 2022. On the far right-hand side, the plot shows that there were 35 offenses that were anti-Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
