Drivers Impaired by Multiple Substances Involved in Fatal Crashes (2008-2016)

This chart highlights recent data from Washington State which revealed that multi-substance impairment was the most common type of impairment found among drivers involved in fatal crashes between 2008 and 2016. Among drivers involved in fatal crashes during this timeframe, 44% tested positive for two or more substances with alcohol and THC being the most common combination.

When combining alcohol-only impairment (38%) with cases where alcohol was one of several substances, alcohol played a role in more than half of all fatal-crash impairments during this period.
