In the 1960s, NHL stars Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull accidentally discovered the added control and velocity of a shot using a stick with a curved blade after Mikita partially broke his flat stick during a practice, according to the Toronto Star. The rest of the league quickly follows suit, and just 20 years later the average number of goals scored per NHL game had increased by an entire goal.
