After Patrick Roy began playing in the NHL full-time during the 1985-1986 season, the butterfly style of goaltending countered the effects of the curved blade. Combined with better, more mobile defensemen, the butterfly reduced the average number of goals scored in an NHL game below the per-game average of the pre-curved stick era.
