Researchers have calculated the energy used in different sports by their metabolic equivalent (MET), the ratio between the number of calories burned in that sport and the number of calories burned while sitting. For competitive soccer, with an MET of 10, the player is burning calories 10 times as fast as sitting. That figure is an average, accounting for the amounts of time spent sprinting, jogging, and walking on the field.
