A News & Observer analysis of state records, news reports and responses from sheriffs found 244 inmate deaths from 2006 through 2014. That's 46 more deaths than sheriffs had reported during that period to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, which publishes an annual report on jail deaths nationwide. The federal report for 2015 will be released later this year.
