Research fields in the social and natural sciences have different norms for designating paper authorship. While the majority of papers in philosophy are authored by a sole scientists, researchers in other fields tend to work in small groups. In astronomy and astrophysics, nuclear and particle physics, and genetics and heredity, a small proportion of papers are authored by more than 500 researchers, typically connected to a large facility or collaboration.
